NIELIT is a joint Scheme of the Ministry of Information Technology (Department of Electronics) and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), a statutory body for the development of technical education, including computer education, in the country. The Scheme is administered by the NIELIT, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Information Technology, Government of India. The Society is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860.National Institute of Electronics & Information Technology (NIELIT),(erstwhile NIELIT Society), an Autonomous Scientific Society under the administrative control of Department of Electronics & Information Technology (DeitY), Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, Government of India, was set up to carry out Human Resource Development and related activities in the area of Information, Electronics & Communications Technology (IECT). NIELIT is engaged both in Formal & Non-Formal Education in the area of IECT besides development of industry oriented quality education and training programmes in the state-of-the-art areas. NIELIT has endeavoured to establish standards to be the country’s premier institution for Examination and Certification in the field of IECT. It is also one of the National Examination Body, which accredits institutes/organizations for conducting courses in IT in the non-formal sector.
The NIELIT Graduates have been getting recognition at International level and a large no. of candidates with ‘A’ Level qualification, in particular, has joined overseas jobs. The NIELIT Society and CAIT (The Central Academy of Information Technology) of Japan Information Process Development Corporation (JIPDEC) has signed a MoU under which the NIELIT ‘A’ level qualifiers will now be considered at par with CAIT’s “FE-SS”. This means the ‘A’ Level qualifiers will be eligible for working visa in Japan and will not be required to obtain visa for entry to Japan, as required otherwise.
At present, NIELIT has thirty one (31) offices located at Agartala, Aizawl, Ajmer, Aurangabad, Calicut, Chandigarh, Chennai, Chuchuyimlang, Churachandpur, Delhi, Gangtok, Gorakhpur, Guwahati, Imphal, Itanagar, Jammu, Jorhat, Kohima, Kolkata, Kokrajhar, Leh, Lucknow, Lunglei, Patna, Ranchi, Senapati, Shillong, Shimla, Silchar, Srinagar, Tezpur with its Head quarters at New Delhi. It is also well networked throughout India with the presence of about 800 institutes.
The objective of the Scheme is to generate quality manpower in the area of Information Technology (IT) at the national level, by utilizing the facilities and expertise available with the training institutions/organizations in the non-formal sector.
Under the Scheme, computer training institutions/organizations in the non-formal sector are granted accreditation for conducting specified Levels of courses, subject to their meeting well defined norms and criteria. All courses are valid for Government job & these courses are at five levels, namely:
- BCC – Basic Level – 1
- CCC – Basic Level – 2
- O – Foundation Level
- A – Level equivalent to an Advanced Diploma
- B – Level equivalent to an MCA Degree
- C – Level equivalent to an M.Tech Degree
Students can acquire any of these qualifications under the Scheme, if they undergo the particular Level of the NIELIT accredited course in the institutions accredited for conducting the relevant course and are declared successful the examinations conducted by the
NIELIT Society. Working professionals can also appear in the NIELIT examinations directly provided they possess the prescribed relevant experience for that particular Level. In either of the above cases, the candidates should have the requisite educational qualification as indicated in the criteria.
